Do you love Christmas? We are mad about it… maybe it’s because the undersigned here didn’t celebrate it when she was child and so, now that she’s a grownup as enthusiastic as who is waiting for Santa by the fireplace, she decided to catch up with Christmas balls, ornaments, lights, centerpiece, chants, cinnamon cookies and also, but with a more measured enthusiasm, never ending lunches and dinners.
Well, it’s never too late!
And thus, today, the day when the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York is lighted up with thousand colorful lights, with my mind back to such a loved and faraway place, with that smell of musk and skyscrapers in my nose – once you’ve tried it, you can’t forget it, with the Christmas playlist as background music, uncertain about the name of my favorite Christmas song – if only about that one thing! – I’m writing about Christmas. Yes, me, the less appropriate person by definition.
Christmas today has nothing to do with religion, at least for those who have a laic vision of life; it has something to do with culture, with family – the one you were born in, if you’re lucky, or more often the one you chose – with warmth and some homesickness too… because even the most convinced “Scrooges” cannot be untouched by the lonely grandpa’s video we all shared in these days.
And so, let that euphoric atmosphere reach you, imagine the present you desired so much, that one you think you’ve subtly suggested to your partner in many ways… he will have probably not got it or just forgot it, so at least, have fun imagining it. Take your time to choose a present for your loved ones, those you really care about, and for everyone else just choose randomly. Choose the right day to make your Christmas tree and create the right atmosphere: cinnamon and musk should scent the air even if you’re recycling your last year tree. Wear your Christmas jumper, it’s ok for making the tree but not for Christmas dinner, please.
In your nativity scene, as well as baby Jesus, the ox and the ass, let’s also put Belén, Higuain and the other stars that you can find in San Gennaro Vesuviano.
Then, around the 24th midnight, close your eyes and send a thought to all those people who are going to spend their Christmas all alone, not by choice.
Finally, promise you’ll make a good deed to help someone in difficulty. It might be just a drop in the ocean, but it will always be a good deed… and if throughout the year you haven’t been so good, let’s just admit it, no one is like this, it is never too late to change, isn’t it?
Because this is Christmas, if you chose to spend it in the most traditional way or under the sheets wearing a hot Santa lingerie doing things no one would tell at Christmas; or even if you just won’t celebrate it because you follow a different religion, and yes, also for you who keep saying you hate Christmas, it will finally seduce you and convince you to be good…at least for a while!
